The wiki world of NOS Software and Use

This is a site for amateur radio hobbyists [hams] who use NOS. The objective is to present all aspects of NOS use with JNOS emphasis. This site is a wiki. Here is an invitation for any user to share JNOS specific experience with other users.

Four top level documents address the following subjects here:

Top level pages reach out to capture the spirit of the JNOS community:

There are no restrictions for surfing this site and all are welcome to explore the full content. The basic rule of engagement for ALL SITE USERS is: Do not Login to read the material on the site, Do Login when you intend to modify the content on the site. In the event you go away wanting for further information, consider posting your desire on jnos reflector.

INTRODUCTION

What is this wiki about? The environment that gives rise to this site is many SiteUser hams (amateur radio hobbyist) utilize the features of jnos that are provided by one SysopUser ham who installed a network node for use by himself (herself) plus his/her neighbour hams. Further(!)

JNOS is varient of NOS originated more than a quarter century ago to further amateur radio use of digital communication modes. This site addresses JNOS in a comprehensive manner. This author considers it appropriate to document the jnos application in one searchable work that assists the owner to obtain, compile, configure, and use jnos. To that end, many documents are sought, collected, inserted (sometimes rearranged), and validated, to permit a (hopefully)straight forward approach to the task of facility management. (authors aside: material is moved into this wiki 2/19/07 from a word processor document. Much of the organization did not translate well at that time - so there is much "prettying" and "linking" to do at the moment. At this moment the "site user" and "sysop command" material is close to done and may be seen for style and content. Please don't be disheartened by the incomplete nature...)

This site is a WIKI. The principal motivation for this choice is to encourage developers, installers, and users, to keep jnos descriptive material up-to-date. PLEASE consider this an invitation to modify the site material in keeping with your personal experience with jnos, this is one way to assist your fellow ham. Questions, remarks and suggestions about this document are welcome and should be sent to the author via email.

The original material for this site comes from a partially complete rework of the jnos document that is first in the bibliography. At the time of conversion from a single document prepared by document editor into a many-page wiki, the change was deemed appropriate to the objectives of the project. The original document is widely available in ascii text form, the unfinished document is prepared using Open Office V2, and anyone who desires to complete the project is welcome to the file in as-is condition.

This document is prepared and distributed under the LGPL. Conforming to GPL, this work may be modified and redistributed so long as the credits and bibliography remains in tact. One objective abandoned by this project was to widely distribute the document in PDF form for the purpose of defining the status of jnos at the time of rendering (not to be modified by the reader). As jnos changed, one document version would be in step with the modification. The wiki is now seen as a better approach.

For those who seriously want paper or a computer resident image, jdoc2.0.0.4.pdf may be downloaded from this site. There are two good reasons to NOT download the .pdf file - the work is not complete and the file is large (the Internet portal here is slow). You are warned...

WIKI FEATURES

Consider the following as starting points for exploration.

PRACTICES USED IN THIS WIKI

Throughout this document ...> command parameter [bolded] or

...> command parameter

[formatted] is used to signify user entry text or full syntax as displayed on screen. The "...>" prefix denotes jnos prompt seen on the terminal display, but the prefix is absent when the same command is used in a script file. The "command" deontes the instruction, and "parameter" denote the syntax of user supplied data.

This document is based on the most recent UNIX (Linux) platform implementation. Other platforms are suitable to JNOS and this site shows the platform differences as a variance. Also, this document addresses the commands available in the fully configured version of software even though some may not be available by administrator choice. Some features are noted as >deprecated< or >superseded< if the feature is removed in the latest version as an approach to support older releases.

Throughout this document [tbd] signifies "to be determined" later. it is perhaps an OOPS [issue] discovered by the authors but not resolved prior to the moment. The author(s) original hope was that you don't find any. At this writing there are almost 100 instances of [tbd] on the wiki - removing them remains a formitable job. Please be patient? {on the other hand - if you know the answer...}

Special attention is given to the prerequisites for functionality. When this document is intended for a web enabled environment, cross reference material is made available thru anchors to remote web sites and to example files. The content of this site may also be rendered into other forms by using presentation utilities where anchors require another representation. ASCII format text was indented simply so that gateways which handle this material do not complain about seeing a line beginning with command text. It is recommended that users who return this work into ASCII format at a later date use caution.

Terminology used here

As with any activity, certain vocabulary is used and may be ambiguous to those engaged in other endeavors. The networking - amateur radio - packet radio - jnos user may use the JnosTerm page to clarify meaning of selected terms.

How to use this site

A Wiki is a collaborative tool. This site exists primarily for JNOS users, but it may expand to the entire NOS family of software in the future. Anyone with ties to NOS can contribute and share, we hope you will add your thoughts. There are minimal requirements for contributors -- Sign on with real-world registration info and proceed. In the spirit of open source projects, contributors are asked to include themselves in the bibliography for this site. The most useful features here are:

To learn more about what a WikiWikiWeb is, read about WhyWikiWorks and the WikiNature. Also, consult the HelpMiscellaneous/FrequentlyAskedQuestions page. There are normal qualifications for wiki administrator privileges -- Presently there is one admin who is looking for at least two more who have the desire and some experience.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

The bib is presented in three sections based on the nature of the contribution.

ORIGINAL TEXT

This first section includes contributors of written material on this site. The authors to date are:

To anyone who added content to this wiki and do not find yourself here, PLEASE consider adding your name to this list too -- we would like to know you. Also consider creating your own user page to describe your own interests and provide links to your web sites. The site administrators ask that providers of ONLY ATTACHMENTS not add themselves to the bibliography, rather please note the origin of an attachment within the attachment itself, and also in descriptive text on the wiki page containing the link to the attachment.

DOCUMENTS COMPILED HEREIN

The second section includes the published works of authors that are copied to this wiki by contributors. Sometimes works are modified in format to fit the style of this site and content is always open to modification as conditions change. JnosWikiBib lists works compiled into this site – either in total or with a major portion extracted. (NOTE: potentially the author may have updated the work subsequently to the moment of inclusion herein)

Material and documents from other sources may be included here only upon approval of the original author. Inclusions are usually in the form of copies of material from other sites. After inclusion, copied material may not remain in the original condition thus if the original author revises his own works there will be two versions of the material. Thus consider including reference dates in the bib when adding material.

DOCUMENTS REFERENCED

The third section lists other sources that may be of interest to the reader, and the material is only found external to this site thru links to other sites. JnosWikiRef lists works worthy of consideration in deeper research of NOS technology. This is not exhaustive; there are many other interesting articles, but these are the ones most relevant to NOS and TCP/IP. When no link (or a broken link) is given, the use of a search tool [eg: google] can often locate the document.
